Ingried Swan
Ingried has a passion for stitch and bright colours and she can’t recall a time when she didn’t create with a needle and thread. With a degree in Chemistry and a career in industry behind her, she embarked on almost eight years of study in Design and Embroidery which encompassed traditional, historic and world textiles but focussed on contemporary stitch. Armed with the skills of over 30 hand stitches used in both traditional and contemporary ways, she now creates highly textural hand stitched pieces in her garden studio in the village of Cotherstone.
Starting by creating a background fabric by piecing small fabric fragments, sometimes by machine, she adds hand stitches and further small fragments and trapped items. Ingried describes her worked pieces as ‘crunchy’ because of the layers of stitch and tiny fragment pieces and often adds scrolled cords and maybe hidden words and found items.
All her pieces are inspired by gardens or poetry and sometimes folklore. Her work is 3D on occasion, often unframed and frequently includes mixed media techniques with paint under or on top of her stitching, producing a typically highly colourful finished work.
