Wendy Dawson-Young
Wendy is an established ceramicist, although she started her career in art studying Contemporary Art Practice and Printmaking at Leith School of Art. Her pottery studio is located at her home in picturesque Romaldkirk in Teesdale.
Her work takes inspiration from the rugged landscape, flora, and fauna of the North Pennines, with recent projects based upon the trees of Upper Teesdale, most particularly the impact of climate change, storms and disease upon them. Other work reflects the landscape, farming practices and wildlife of the locality.
Very recently, she has been creating a body of work reflecting the rugged rockscapes of the crags and scars to be found in the Upper Tees valley. This work has come to incorporate shapes and surface patterns inspired by the impact of lead mining on the landscape around Middleton-in-Teesdale, which abound in the form of pits, spoil heaps, and hushes.
